Portuguese tile history began with Moorish al-zellij in the 8th century, which influenced the geometric patterns of the early azulejo. King Manuel I's visit to Spain in the late 15th century introduced advanced techniques, leading to the establishment of Portuguese tile workshops in 1560 and a surge in popularity. Azulejos became crucial in rebuilding Lisbon after the 1755 earthquake, featuring prominent blue and white designs inspired by Chinese porcelain and Dutch Delftware, and continued to evolve with Baroque, Art Nouveau, and Art Deco styles.
